SQL Setup on the database server

Follow one of the following guides for installing SQL on the server. During the server setup you must install SQL on your server prior to installing Synergy. This topic outlines the different types of SQL, and contains links to the step by step installation guides.

Which type of SQL to install on the server

  1. Recommended install
    Use this when there isn't any versions of SQL on the server. Synergy recommends to install the SQL 2012 Express Edition. Please follow the : SQL2012 Express Install Instructions
  2. Backup Exec - WARNING!
    If you are using an older version of Backup Exec that uses SQL2005, you may have problems when loading SQL 2008R2 (or higher), as the SQL Browser is replaced by the 2008R2 version. When using Backup Exec please contact your IT Support Team before proceeding with this setup to confirm if a newer SQL version is supported.
  3. Custom install - SQL is already installed on the server, and I require a separate SQL instance for one of the following versions of SQL Enterprise:
    1. Microsoft SQL 2008R2 Standard or Enterprise edition - SQL 2008R2 Install Instructions
    2. Microsoft SQL 2008R2 Express edition - SQL 2008R2 Express Install Instructions
    3. Microsoft SQL 2012 Standard or Enterprise edition - SQL 2012 Install Instructions
    4. Microsoft SQL 2012 Express edition - SQL 2012 Express Install Instructions
    5. Microsoft SQL 2014 Express edition - SQL 2014 Express Install Instructions

What's the difference between Express and Standard/Enterprise Edition?

The Standard/Enterprise edition may be available with your server operating system. Typically, if you have this edition installed on your server, you are unable to install the Express edition that Synergy provide. Please check with the Microsoft website to determine if you already have a copy of the Standard or Enterprise Edition included on your server operating system installation disk.  

Microsoft supply a cut down, free version of SQL and is called Express. This is the version that Synergy supply for use with the Synergy database. 

 

Tip: It's advisable to stop all existing SQL instances on your server before commencing the SQL instance install for Synergy. Remember to restart them once you're finished.
