SQL 2012 Express

Recommended - This is a pre-configured installation of SQL for your server, designed to make installing SQL easier.  You will be able to click Next through each screen. If you do not already have SQL installed on your server, please follow the steps below for this recommended install process.

Advanced users only! - This is a manual installation of SQL and should only be used by those with experience in using and installing SQL.  Please use our recommendations made on each screen in the instructions below.

If you are already using SQL Enterprise or Standard editions on the server, please locate the installation CD or files provided by Microsoft.Click here to locate the topic containing the instructions for installing SQL 2008 enterprise or standard editions.

The Technical Installation Guide for Synergy includes a download link to obtain all the required setup files. Use the setup file included with the Technical Install Guide if you are completing either the Automatic or Manual Installation methods.

If you have downloaded this ZIP file to your network, please locate the following folder:

• 64 bit Windows: SQL Express 2012 > SQLEXPR_x64 OR
• 32 bit Windows:SQL Express 2012 > SQLEXPR_x86

Click on a link below to download the file from Support in Synergy Cloud Services.

• 64 bit SQL Express 2012 x64.zip OR 
• 32 bit SQL Express 2012 x86.zip

Unzip this file to your server and then proceed with the Install Instructions.

If you are completing the Manual Installation, you can download the SQL Express 2012 Installer from the Microsoft website:

Choose one of the following files from the list:

• 64 bit Installer - ENU\x64\SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe
• 32 bit Installer - ENU\x86\SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe

Launch SQL 2012 Express installer.

• 32 bit Windows: Run the file Setup_x86.bat
• 64 bit Windows: Run the file Setup_x64.bat

If User Account Control (UAC) is enabled on the server, click Yes to start the SQL setup process.

Check the 'I accept the license terms' box to agree to the Microsoft license terms, then click Next.

By default any product updates will be downloaded and installed during the initial setup process. Click Next.

The installation of the setup software required to for SQL Express 2012 will commence. This process will take a few minutes to complete. Product updates will also be download updates at this time, if available.

Leave the settings as default, and click next.

Ensure the named instance is 'SYNERGY'. Click next.

Click next.

Set a password for the SQL Instance.

• Recommended - The default password is 'Synergy2012’ (case sensitive).
• Optional - Enter a customised password.

Click next and the installation process will begin.

The install of SQL Express 2012 will begin. This process will take a few minutes to complete.

Check the results show that SQL has been installed successfully. If not please contact Synergy Support.

Click Close to exit the install wizard.

Locate the installation file that you downloaded, and launch the SQL Express 2012 installer file. This installer file will be named either:

• 64 bit Installer - ENU\x64\SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe
• 32 bit Installer - ENU\x86\SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe

Select 'New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation'.

Check the 'I accept the license terms' box to agree to the Microsoft license terms, then click Next.

The installation of the setup software required to for SQL Express 2012 will commence. This process will take a few minutes to complete. If download of product updates was selected on the previous screen, the installation process will download any available updates at this time.

Check the box for Instance Features > Database Engine Services. Leave the other boxes unchecked. Click next.

Select the 'Named Instance' option, and enter the instance name of 'SYNERGY'. Click next.

Account provisioning tab

Select the 'Mixed Mode' Authentication option. Then setup the password and SQL Server administrators.

Password

Set a password for the SQL Instance.

• Recommended - 'Synergy2012’ (case sensitive).
• Optional - Enter a customised password.

Specify SQL Server administrators (Optional)

Add at least active directory account as the administrator (usually an admin user).

• If logged in as the admin user on the server, then select ’Add current user’.
• If logged in as another user, select ’Add...’ find and select the Administrator user from the list of users.

Data directories tab (Optional)

Specify the location of the database files if other than the default C drive. Changing the ’Data root directory’ changes the other directories. This is not essential and depends upon individual server configurations. Click next. 

Click Next.

The install of SQL Express 2012 will begin. This process will take a few minutes to complete.

Click Close to exit the install wizard.

Before the installation is complete a few settings need to be adjusted in the SQL Server Configuration Manager to allow Synergy to run correctly. Complete the following steps:

1. Go to Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2012 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Configuration Manager.
2. In the left panel expand the 'SQL Server Network Configuration' and select 'Protocols for SYNERGY' from the list.
3. Highlight 'Named Pipes' in the right panel.
4. Right mouse click 'Named Pipes' and select 'Enable' from the list.
5. Highlight 'TCP/IP', and right mouse click and select 'Enable'.
6. The SQL Server Network Configuration will now look like below:

7. Next select 'SQL Server Services' in the left panel.
8. In the right panel select 'SQL Server (Synergy)' from the list.
9. Right mouse click 'SQL Server (Synergy)' and select 'Restart' from the list shown.
10. After the restart process of the server has completed, highlight the service 'SQL Server Browser'.
11. Right mouse click 'SQL Server Browser' and select 'Restart' from the list.
12. Once the restart process has completed, setup of SQL Server 2012 is finished.
